Utah Bankruptcy Filings Up In 2010

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, 17,968 Utahns and Utah businesses filed for bankruptcy during 2010. The number represents a 24 percent increase compared to 2009. The Tribune article sees the increase as as a sign that “many of [Utah] residents continue to struggle with job losses and too much debt amid an uncertain economy,” and notes that “more older Utahns appear to be seeking debt relief than during the past.” These findings are consistent with the volume and types of bankruptcy cases that I have seen come through my office. I expect to see people using bankruptcy as an honest and acceptable way to get relief and save their homes in the upcoming year as unemployment rates continue to stay high and mortgage lenders move forward with foreclosing on properties that they were unable to foreclose last year. Call me at 801-337-3907 if you are overwhelmed with debt and want to talk with an experienced Salt Lake bankruptcy lawyer about your legal options.
